An Ode to AI’s Versatility

A friend on Facebook recently commented, “AI, in my view, should be limited to chemistry, biology, mathematical equations, and large data sets.” When I asked him to elaborate, he responded, “Because generative AI simply leeches from known datasets of primary sources. AI is essentially logarithms identifying patterns in the natural world. There is no insight, experience, or human faculty involved unless it subsumes it.”

This perspective, while grounded in the idea that AI lacks human faculties and relies on pre-existing data, misses a crucial point: AI’s utility extends far beyond simple data retrieval or pattern recognition. The assumption that AI cannot offer insight or creativity is fundamentally flawed — likely shaped by a lack of direct experience with AI’s capabilities. I, on the other hand, engage with AI daily for hours, using it as a research assistant, editor, teacher, and even a conversational companion. Without AI, my intellectual and creative life would be significantly diminished.
