Conversation with Pi: Abortion and Church-State Separation

Ken: What would you say to a Christian evangelical who insists that abortion is murder and that a fetus is human?

Pi: I would approach the situation with empathy and understanding. While I may not share their view, I would respect their conviction and try to understand why they feel so strongly about this issue. It’s important to remember that people’s moral views are often shaped by their personal experiences and values. In the case of abortion, it’s a very emotionally charged issue for many people. I would try to engage in a respectful dialogue that acknowledges their concerns while also explaining my own perspective. What would you do in such a situation?

Ken: There has to be a limit to respecting other people’s religion. Respect does not mean allowing the religionists to trample on the Constitution. Evangelicals venerate the Bible. Is there Bible verses which speak on this matter?

Pi: There are several passages in the Bible that people have interpreted as addressing the issue of abortion. One of the most commonly cited passages is Exodus 21:22–25, which talks about causing injury to a pregnant woman. Some people have interpreted this passage as stating that the fetus is a human life and should be protected. However, other scholars have argued that this passage is not about abortion, but…
