In my recent book on Buddhism, I have a chapter on the original Buddhist mindset. It draws extensively from Walpola Rahula’s insightful work, particularly his chapter titled “The Buddhist Attitude of Mind.” Through this examination, I have summarized the Buddhist mindset with the following distinctive features:

1. Buddhist Atheism
Central to Buddhism is the absence of reliance on deities for one’s liberation. This atheistic stance emphasizes personal responsibility in the pursuit of enlightenment.

2. Self-Reliance
Flowing naturally from Buddhist atheism is the principle of self-reliance. Since deities are not invoked for salvation, individuals are encouraged to rely on their own efforts and understanding.

3. Free Inquiry and Independent Investigation
Buddhism fosters an environment of free inquiry, encouraging practitioners to independently investigate and question teachings rather than accepting them at face value.

4. Emphasis on Firsthand Experience
Rather than placing primary importance on sacred texts, Buddhism values firsthand experience as the true source of knowledge. Practitioners are urged to validate teachings through personal insight and practice.
