Pondering the Deeper Truth of the Statement of “God Is One”

Throughout history, the phrase “God is one” has been understood primarily as a declaration of monotheism, affirming the existence of a single, supreme deity. However, an alternative interpretation that transcends a strictly theistic framework suggests that this phrase conveys a deeper metaphysical truth: the fundamental unity underlying all existence. This broader understanding finds resonance in multiple spiritual and philosophical traditions, offering a vision of interconnected reality that can bridge monotheistic and Dharmic traditions.

“God is One” in the Abrahamic Traditions

The teaching “God is one” appears in several religious traditions, particularly in Abrahamic scriptures:

  • Judaism: Shema Yisrael (Deuteronomy 6:4) — “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”
  • Christianity: Mark 12:29 (quoting Deuteronomy) — “The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
  • Islam: Tawhid (Qur’an 112:1) — “Say: He is Allah, [who is] One.”
