About two weeks ago, a female friend shared her thoughts on the disadvantages of being born a woman on Facebook. She expressed that women face challenges both physically and mentally, particularly due to their heightened emotions and need for attention, which can make them vulnerable to manipulation by men.

Gender equality is an important issue that is rarely discussed in Buddhist circles. I want to take this opportunity to reflect on it from a Buddhist perspective. The following is my response to this Dharma sister.

Dear ________,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the challenges women face. I appreciate your perspective and understand how growing up in a traditional society like Thailand can shape views on gender dynamics.

Are Women Disadvantaged?

You mentioned that women’s emotional nature and desire for attention can make them susceptible to manipulation. While there is some truth, it presents only part of the picture. A friend once told me that a woman's greatest desire is to be desired. While this is often true, men also crave validation, though they express it differently—seeking power, status, and wealth as markers of desirability.
