The investigation of dhamma, or dhamma-vicaya, is a key factor in the Buddhist path toward enlightenment and one of the Seven Factors of Enlightenment. In fact, it is second only to the mindfulness factor.

Far from blind faith or dogmatic adherence, this investigative approach urges practitioners to question, observe, and directly understand the Buddha’s teachings through experiential inquiry. Investigation of dhamma is a rigorous and multidimensional practice that encompasses examining doctrinal issues, engaging in both external and internal research, and cultivating an open-minded, unbiased approach. The process serves as a foundation for developing wisdom by encouraging practitioners to approach reality with curiosity, introspection, and a suspension of judgment and belief systems. In this essay, we will explore the aspects of dhamma-vicaya as a disciplined investigation into doctrine, a two-fold inquiry into both external and internal phenomena, and a non-dogmatic, empirical approach guided by the principles of the Kalama Sutta.
