A monk friend recently posed a good question to a group. He asked, “What is compassion and how can we practice it?”
Compassion is often described as the heartfelt desire to alleviate the suffering of others, and it plays a vital role in fostering connections among individuals and within communities. Practicing compassion requires intention and effort, as it involves clearing away barriers, cultivating self-love, and developing mindfulness. Clearing Away Barriers
Just as we cannot force ourselves to love another person, we cannot force ourselves to have compassion on other people. But one thing we can do is to clear away the barriers that prevent us from empathizing with others. Often, our inability to connect with those around us stems from prejudice, ignorance, or preconceived notions. These barriers can cloud our judgment and create a divide between ourselves and others.
