Two Types of Liberation

Wisdom liberation and heart liberation are two essential concepts in Buddhism, each representing different paths toward freedom and enlightenment. In the late 90s, one of my Buddhist teachers opined that I realized wisdom liberation. The other liberation would take longer.

Wisdom liberation (Prajñā vimukti) refers to the liberation achieved through the cultivation of wisdom. This form of liberation emphasizes deep understanding and insight into fundamental truths, particularly the nature of impermanence, non-self, and suffering. Practitioners attain wisdom liberation by studying scriptures, engaging in meditation, and contemplating these truths. The focus is on expanding one’s awareness and insight, leading to a profound realization of reality.

On the other hand, heart liberation (Citta vimukti) centers on emotional and psychological freedom. It involves the release of attachments, cultivating inner peace, and achieving emotional balance. While wisdom liberation is primarily about intellectual understanding, heart liberation is about emotional freedom — letting go of mental disturbances and cultivating inner tranquility. This form of liberation is realized through practices such as mindfulness and meditation, with an emphasis on developing peace, harmony, and emotional stability.
