Why Harsh Speech Can be Right Speech

A Buddhist friend recently posted on Facebook the following: “Unpleasant words are sources of hollow anger. Abandon harsh speech.” After I expressed my disagreement with him, he said, “There is never a time where one needs to speak up with harsh words. Gentle words accomplish more and peacefully. Have you heard the DL speak angry words? Besides, all speeches carry karmic consequences.”

While I respect his perspective on speech and the teachings of Buddhism, I believe it is important to address a few points regarding the necessity of speaking up, especially in the face of injustice. Let’s consider the following:

1. Historical Inaccuracy

It’s historically untrue to claim that there is never a time for harsh words. Throughout history, many spiritual leaders and figures have spoken out against injustices, sometimes using strong language to convey the urgency of their message. Silence in the face of wrongdoing has often allowed oppressive regimes and harmful practices to persist.

2. The Dalai Lama’s Stance

The Dalai Lama, while advocating for compassion and non-violence, has unequivocally condemned violence, sexual abuse, human rights violations, and environmental destruction. He has used his platform to speak out against these issues, often employing strong language to highlight…
